Let There be Light

Artist Karen Ryan really had a light bulb "ah ha" moment! Last week she premiered her newest works in London called " 'Untitled' lights." Ryan takes traditional lampshades and upholsters them in artists’ canvas. She then paints the inner surface. "Untitled" are paintings that are internally lit, Ryan uses the familiar scallop standard lamp shade as her canvas. The lamp shade has been made larger than normal 18 inches 23 inches and its internal light fitting redesigned for its new life. The scallop shade is primed as a traditional canvas with gesso, its structure is made opaque so that no light penetrates its form but instead lights the thickness and stroke of paint marks and colours. Ryan commented, "I light colour rather than colour light. I abandon my artwork to the floor or a table."

Painting re-invented once again!! Amazing! Why didn't I think of that??

I Want This!

I saw this amazing work of floor art by German product designer Katrin Sonnleitner today and I absolutely love it! Puzzle meet rug, rug meet puzzle! Fabulous!

The puzzle pieces used for the rugs are made of a recyclable mix of both natural and synthetic rubber. Isn't it so cool!! I want it! My only fear is that I wouldn't leave the house until I put it all together!

Who knew a potato could be so much fun?

My recent adventures at the museum have been creating a number of lesson plans and activities that coorespond to a new traveling exhibit the Teacher Resource Center is launching this fall. The exhibit is on the Silk Road and focuses on a number of objects dealing with the subject. This week I have been working on an art project that teaches kids about a Chinese Chop, a stamp or seal for a personal signature used to mark important documents, contracts and art.

Here is the museum object:

and.. here is my art project version:

Whoever thought I could have so much fun with a potato, an X-Acto knife, and some paint?? I had no idea! This project was actally a bit complicated because I had to research Chinese Characters and their meaning (the character above means "rice plant")and then try to translate those characters into child friendly images that they could connect with and then easily draw and carve onto a potato!

So, if any of you are bored and have some potatoes lying around, you should try making stamps (chops) out of them! For me, it doubled nicely as a practice round for the upcoming pumpkin carving season!

Deskman

I have little to talk about these days relating to anything in the real world. However, I have a plethera of things to say regarding school, school related activities, art, art projects, museums or educational lesson plans about the Silk Road. This is my life. Exciting to me. Probably not so exciting to everybody else. As an attempt to blend my two worlds, I would like to share with you a drawing that I did on my desk during my Senior Seminar a couple of weeks ago. I know, I'm pretty bad drawing on school property ( :) ) Artist meets rebel - aren't they one in the same?? This little guy is the only thing that kept me from getting post tramatic stress disorder while watching the intense movie Apocalpyse Now.

taggin'

...from Lindsay..thanks girl!!

1. Where did you meet your husband?

I met John at a party. I was with my friend Kassy one Friday night. We were at the gas station by her house on 21/21 and we ran into a couple of her old friends, Dustin and Eric (I swear that girl knows everyone!!), they invited us to Eric's house to a party and told her that her life long friend ( and high school love), John, was there and would be excited to hear that they ran into her. Kassy and I walked back to Kass's house not really planning on attending the fiesta when all of a sudden her phone rang, it was John asking Kassy to come and he would buy her beer of choice. Not being able to turn down free Natural Light, she agreed. He asked if she had any friends that he could make out with (somewhat joking - I think??) She told John, "you should meet my friend Annie, she's a hippie, you'll like her." (Kassy always referred to me as her hippie friend, as if I am from some other planet or something.) So John somehow ended up at the 21/21 gas station getting Kass her beer and waiting for us to pick him up and go to Eric's. We took forever getting ready and all of a sudden I went to open Kassy's backdoor to leave, and there stood this hot guy at the backsteps! He scared me!! Then I thought to myself, "so this must be John."

"hey, I'm John" he said

"hi" ..

"hi johnny, its been forever!! This is my hippie friend, Annie" says Kass

"yeah------ we just met" he said as he smiled at me.

* it reality I guess that John and I actually met months before once when Travis and I accidentally locked Kass's keys in the car and then after that the jeep had a melt down and Kass called John to come over and try to fix it (him being a jeep guy and all.) He came over sometime the next morning.. I was asleep on the couch and Kass hit me to wake up and say hi to some dude she knew. More interested in my sleep, I maganed to whisper "hi" and then passed out again. I didn't remember him and vise versa he didn't remember me. So "party night - June 30, 2006" is the official night we met. To say we hit it off would be an understatement. We haven't been apart since.

2. What is the first thing you said to your husband?

"hi"
The night that John and I met we talked all night. I took him home on my way home. Then he asked what I was going to do. "now?" I asked(it was like 1 in the morning). "I need to go and take my dog out and then I'm going to bed"

"can I come on a walk with you?"
So John followed me to my house to walk the pug. (The walk turned into a three hour walk) then after that we talked on the phone until the break of dawn. So to answer this question - I guess it would be safe to say that we talked about everything!

3. Where was your first date?

The next day after we met - Saturday July 1st. John and Dustin came and picked me up for lunch and a swim at the Cottonwood Club. That was our first date!

4. Where was your first kiss?

On the grassy hill by the tennis court at the Cottonwood Heights Community Center. Under a blanket of stars. during our first walk with Ebi!!

5. Did you have a long or short courtship and engagement?

total one year. We got married on June 30, 2007. A year to the day that we met.

6. Where did you get engaged?

It was winter break. I was working a ton at the Roof and was tired and stressed for the holiday season that is so busy in the restaurant biz... I had one day off and had to spend it moving my stuff from one storage garage to a new one. It was cold and wet and not fun to spend my one day off moving stuff. John helped me of course!! After a long day, we were so tired and hungry after a full day of moving. He took me to one of my favorite restaurants Lemongrass Thai. We had a delicious meal. In the middle of our dinner, he told me he had to go to the car to get his id. "but isn't it in your wallet?" I said.

"Um, no. I just have to go to the car ok??"

he went to the car knowing very well that he had his wallet. and came back a few minutes later. He was really nervous and he kept clearing his throat. All of a sudden he put a little box on the table and told me to open it!!! It was so sweet!!

I felt so bad that I made him work all day in the snow!! He had been playing that night to be the night and I had no idea and worked him to exhaustion!! After we left Lemongrass we went to his mom's house where his sisters were waiting for us! They were so excited! We were all sitting around talking for about an hour when the door flew open and Jane came flying through the door! "Are they here yet?"

It was so fun!! I got a huge bunch of roses and then we went to tell my parents!! It was so fun and exciting! I still can't believe the magic that he has brought into my life!!

7. Where were you married?

We got married in Hana, Hawaii (Maui)

8. How did your reception go?

We actually had two "reception" type events. One was in Hana right after the wedding. We all went to dinner and the Hana Maui Hotel! It was really nice!

Our Salt Lake Party was so crazy! Ebi was nervous because we had just gotten back from Hawaii and we were living in a new place, she kept me up all night. So I didn't get any sleep!

but,It was beautiful and the weather was perfect! We spent two days setting it up and the day of the party was crazy! We worked all day to get ready and then I went and got my hair done and was running late (I have way too much hair) so I had to speed to Jane's to change my clothes.. I ran outside and there were people everywhere! It was a whirlwind, a tornado of talking and hugging!! Then it was over! John and I didn't get a chance to eat, or sit down! After everyone had left, we stayed at the Jane's for a sleepover and ordered pizza and stayed up late and talked. I was so tired that night that I couldn't sleep!! The next day we had a family breakfast with my parents, jane, the sibs and Aunt El!! By the way, I need to mention that Aunt El made me the most beautiful Haku for my hair!! I still have it hanging on my side of the bed! I love it!! Thank you!

9. How was your honeymoon?

Our honeymoon was amazing! We were in Hawaii and we just played and explored! We hiked through a bamboo forest, walked in a crater, went to a red sand beach, we got take out thai food from a street vendor and then took it up to a giant cross that looked over the whole Hana valley to eat it, and we drove in the rain in a jeep with the top down listening to opera music in the middle of the jungle!! There aren't words to describe! It was an amazing trip!!

$35,000 Car

One night this week I was walking to my car after a long day of school and work. My brain was fried and I could feel my brain dead head slowly turning from dead to alive with pain as a headache came over me from over use. With every step, left than right, I could feel me getting grumpier and grumpier. Left, Right, Left, Right. When I suddenly stomped past a car written "For Sale" on it.

As a side note, I've always loved handwritten writing, big and loud, on cars. You know what I'm talking about, like "Just Married," "Go Team Go," "Honk if you're Horny," or "For Sale." For some reason it intrigues me, I'm not sure why!!

Anyway, I was walking along and all of a sudden some such writing caught my eye....

Here was this crappy car for sale. I thought grumpily to myself, "Good luck selling that piece of shit." Then I read the writing more closely!

Instantly my grumpiness fell off of me with a big giant THUD!

This is hilarious! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!!

bye bye

As much as I have been pushing back this blog post, I realized today that this denial behavior is not healthy.. enough is enough. It is time to take a deep breath and admit the truth.... summer is coming to an end, even more, Summer is so OVER!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! I'm with Bob Marley, I need "13 months of sunshine!"

The trees are slowly putting on their fall fashions of red and orange and yellow, and summer-wear fashions are slowing turning to sweaters and shoes! This is the time of the year that I officially start panicing at the very thought of not being able to wear my flip flops day in and day out.

With that, my mourning for the warmth officially begins! Goodbye summer!! I love you and will be anxiously waiting for what delicious surprises you have hidden beneath your warm sunshine next year!

Time to pull out the hoodies and sweaters (i'm keeping my flip flops on until it snows though!! I refuse to give em' up without a fight. What can I say, I'm an island girl at heart!)

Labor Day

I hope that everyone had a great long weekend! For us, the weekend went by way way too fast!! It was a fun filled full weekend overflowing with car washings, homework, errands, dinners and BBQs.

Our cute landlord, Jessica, threw a BBQ for her own birthday at our house! It was so fun! Good food, good people and good laughs! We are still recovering!
